Propofol is an amnestic agent used during surgery to reduce the activity of the brain and the nervous system. It is also used in patients who need a breathing tube, as stated by Drugs.

People who have high cholesterol or epilepsy should inform the doctor prior to using propofol. Propofol is not expected to cause harm to an unborn baby, but it can harm a nursing baby. It is given to a patient through an injection and may cause dizziness. A person should not drive after receiving a propofol injection. Propofol may have numerous side effects, such as hives, swelling and breathing difficulty, to people who may have allergic reactions.
