How is a pulse rate chart helpful?

A pulse rate chart, or target heart rate chart, is helpful to monitor exertion levels during exercise, states the American Heart Association. The information helps people determine if they are working out too hard or not hard enough.
A pulse rate that is too high indicates that the exerciser should slow down until the rate is within the target range, explains the AHA. On the other hand, a low reading suggests that the exerciser should exert more effort. The chart displays the target heart rate zone by age, and this range covers 50 to 85 percent of the average maximum heart rate.
