The pumpkin is technically a fruit, according to the Mayo Clinic. This fruit is native to North America and is a type of winter squash. They are typically round and have a yellow to orange color.
Pumpkins are traditionally known for their holiday use as jack-o-lanterns during Halloween. Most all parts of a pumpkin are edible, with some uses including pies and soups. Despite labeling, most canned puree pumpkin products are not made with actual pumpkins but with butternut squash. In addition to humans, poultry, dogs and cats can eat pumpkins as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet, and pumpkin is a common ingredient in commercial pet food.
