The purple pitcher plant, or Saracenia purpurea, is a carnivorous plant with a hooded pitcher-like stalk, according to the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. It is native to the United States and is a butterfly-attractor.
The purple pitcher plant has a purplish-red flower that grows at the top of the stalk and a rosette of green-red leaves at the base of the plant. It is a perennial plant. Flowers will bloom from May to August, and are red or purple. The purple pitcher plant prefers full sun conditions, with a moist or wet acidic soil. It eats by trapping insects in its tube-like stalk.
