The Million Man March was a political demonstration to promote family values and unity among African Americans. The march was held on Oct. 16, 1995 in Washington, D.C.
Estimates at the time were that anywhere from 400,000 to just over a million people joined the march. The march was organized by Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam. It was directed by Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr., who was the former executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP. The goal was to bring about a spiritual renewal that instilled in African-American men a kind of personal responsibility in regard to improving the condition of all African Americans.
