Rebound tenderness refers to point tenderness or pain felt in the abdomen during a touch examination by a medical professional. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) report that pain may range from mild to severe, and it is generally felt when the abdomen is touched and released.
Rebound tenderness, also called "peritonitis, occurs when tissue lining the abdominal cavity is irritated, inflamed or infected. The NIH cites several possible causes, including abdominal abscess, appendicitis, certain types of hernias, Meckel's diverticulum and twisted Fallopian tubes (Ovarian torsion). The NIH asserts that if any of these symptoms are experienced, you should call 911 or seek emergency treatment right away.
