A colonoscopy is advised for all persons 50 years of age; those at an increased risk for colorectal cancer should start screenings earlier, according to the CDC. The tests should be administered every 10 years until at least age 75.
A lighted tube examines the rectum and colon during the procedure, in which tissue samples may be taken and polyps are often removed. A colonoscopy may be ordered for patients exhibiting symptoms of colorectal disorders, such as changes in bowel habits, pain, rectal bleeding and weight loss, explains Medline Plus. These tests also provide more information when other colorectal screenings produce abnormal or uncertain results.
