Diabetic diets do not typically include a recommended daily sugar intake, but they do include a recommended daily carbohydrate intake. Diabetics may consume limited amounts of sugar as long as they substitute the sugar-containing food for another carbohydrate food in their meal plan, explains the American Diabetes Association.
For example, if a person with diabetes wants to have a cookie after dinner, he should reduce his carbohydrate intake at dinner to account for the cookie. This keeps his total carbohydrate count the same while allowing him to enjoy a treat. Most diabetics should consume 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, according to the American Diabetes Association. Many foods contain carbohydrates, including bread, potatoes, fruit, milk and corn.
