What are the recommended dry ice shipping containers?

As of 2014, the recommended container for shipping perishable items with dry ice is a 2-inch thick urethane or polystyrene insulated corrugated box. High-quality insulated containers allow the release of carbon dioxide gas from the dry ice, reduce the amount of dry ice needed and allow extended shipping times.

Five to 10 pounds of dry ice are needed for each 24-hour period until the package reaches its destination. In a well-insulated shipping container, 5 to 10 pounds of dry ice keeps up to 15 quarts frozen for 24 hours. Leaving the inner insulated carton unsealed inside the corrugated box may allow carbon dioxide gas to escape the package.
