What is a reflection journal?

A reflection journal is the product of a writing technique often used as an educational and leadership development strategy to promote deep levels of critical thinking and analysis. This journal writing technique requires that the writer document thoughts, observations and reflections related to a certain topic or experience over time.
In education or training, a reflection journal may require particular content or structure. However, these writing activities are often free-form, allowing the documentation of quick thoughts, impressions and questions as they occur. The goal should be to focus on identifying themes and making connections between unlike things by thinking deeply about what is observed.
