According to the Regional Development Agencies Act of 1998, Regional Development Agencies were created to be the strategic driver of economic development and prosperity in their region. Their responsibilities were to further economic development and regeneration, promote business efficiency, promote employment, enhance skills of application and contribute to sustainable development.
Though abolished in 2010, Turkey was to be equipped in 2009 with a Regional Development Agency (RDA) as part of the step-by-step process for its inclusion into the EU. Ultimately, the duty of the RDA was to keep under constant review a five- to 10-year regional economic strategy of various objectives.
