How does regular cardiorespiratory exercise affect hypertension?

According to WebMD, regular cardiovascular exercise can lower high blood pressure and make the heart stronger. Other types of exercise, such as weight training, also offer similar benefits.
WebMD recommends exercising at a moderate pace for 30 minutes a day, five times a week. More strenuous activities such as jogging can have the same effect in less time, such as 20 minutes sessions daily for three to four days a week. If an individual is not already active, he should first consult his doctor before beginning a new exercise plan. Warm-ups are generally recommended, but cool-downs are especially important for people with hypertension.
