As of 2015, published scientific literature suggests that excessive amounts of sugar in the body may contribute to high blood pressure. This medical condition is a known risk factor for stroke and cardiac disease, notes Dr. Stephen Sinatra.

The consumption of foods and beverages that are high in sugar content is said to boost the synthesis of the hormone insulin. This triggers the sympathetic nervous system, which accelerates cardiac activity and elevates blood pressure, according to Forbes.

Research also indicates that increased sugar intake may cause receptors that control blood pressure from functioning properly. Additionally, sugar can also consume stored energy in the body, which can lead to narrowing of the blood vessels and then to hypertension.
