Does religion play a role in society?

Religion does play a role in society, though the extent of its role is dependent on the structure and dynamics of the population. Religion was a theme noted many times in the U.S. Constitution, which ensures the ability of an American to exercise religious freedom.
Whether dictated by governments or informally motivated in a population, religion can serve as a driver of moral virtue and values in a society. In some cases, government institutions and legal systems are based entirely or partly on a religious foundation. Religion also ties into cultural values that impact the ways individuals, families and communities interrelate.
