What are the religions and beliefs of Japan?

Although the majority of people living in Japan do not identify themselves with an organized religion, Japan is strongly associated with Shintoism and Japanese Buddhism. Although Buddhism and even Abrahamic religions made their way to Japan, Shintoism and its derivatives grew organically in Japanese culture, and are therefore an integral part of the society.

Shintoism is largely based on the worship of gods and spirits, which are called "kami." Shintoism places a large emphasis on honor, sincerity and harmony, and is similar in that sense to other Eastern religions like Taoism and Buddhism. Unlike other main religions, Shintoism has neither a clear founding father, nor an infallible scripture.
