According to WebMD, symptoms of acute, or short-term, laryngitis can be treated with simple remedies, such as drinking plenty of fluids, reducing smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and using a humidifier to increase moisture in the room. Additionally, avoid talking as much as possible and speak softly when necessary. Over-the-counter cough suppressants can also help to reduce irritation caused by coughing.

Laryngitis occurs when the larynx, or voice box, becomes inflamed, resulting in soreness, coughing and raspy speech. Chronic laryngitis may have specific underlying causes, such as heartburn or strain from singing, which may need to be treated before the larynx heals. Doctors can prescribe corticosteroids when inflammation in the vocal cords requires immediate relief, Mayo Clinic notes.
