As of 2015, there is no medical treatment to remove lung scarring, also known as pulmonary fibrosis, according to the American Lung Association. Scar tissue that has developed is not repairable, so treatments focus on preventing additional scarring and relieving symptoms.
Medications for pulmonary fibrosis include prednisone, which reduces inflammation, the American Lung Association states. Sometimes other drugs are prescribed to limit immune system responses. Oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen the body takes in, which cuts back on shortness of breath. A lung transplant is an option for healthy patients under 65 who are not finding relief through other treatments.
