Is renters insurance required when renting rooms in Maryland?
By Forinfos - 04/03/2026 - 0 comments
Maryland does not have a state law that requires any renter to carry insurance, regardless of whether a room or an apartment is rented. It is legal for private landlords to require renters insurance when renting rooms.
Maryland's state Insurance Administration recommends all renters carry renters insurance. The property owner's insurance does not cover a tenant's belongings, including damage caused by structural damage or other property issues. Tenants are also liable for any damage they cause to the property, including damage that would otherwise be covered by the property owner's insurance. Renters insurance protects a tenant in both of these scenarios.
