How do you repair a leaking washing machine shut-off valve?

To repair a leaking washing machine shut-off valve, generally all that is required is to tighten the packing nut, but if that does not stop the leak, the packing washer is damaged and must be replaced. Replacing the packing washer requires an adjustable wrench, a screwdriver and no plumbing experience.

If the valve gets used regularly, it is likely that the packing nut has became loose and is the cause of the leak. This is the most common problem causing the leak with newer valves. Follow the steps below to repair the leaking shut-off valve.

1. Tighten the packing nut
Using an adjustable wrench, tighten the packing nut slightly, avoiding over tightening. Test the valve for leaks. If the valve is still leaking, tighten a little more and test again. If this does not solve the leak, move on to the next step.
2. Shut off the water
Before removing the packing washer it is essential that water is shut off to the vale beforehand. This eliminates a large mess to clean up after the job is completed.
3. Replace the packing washer
Remove the handle and the packing nut from the shut-off valve to remove the packing washer. Remove the old packing washer and slide the new one in place. Replace the packing nut, being careful not to over tighten. Turn the water back on and check for leaks. If there are still leaks, tighten the packing nut one-eighth of a turn at a time and continue to check after each turn until leak stops.
