To fix a leaky outdoor faucet, turn off the water supply, unscrew the faucet handle and spigot, check if the washer lays properly in the spigot, and replace any damaged spigot washer, valve system washer or the valve stem. Turn on the water to check if the repair was successful.
- Remove the faucet handle and spigot
Shut off the water supply to the faucet, and undo the faucet handle with a screwdriver. Then turn and remove the faucet spigot with a crescent wrench. Check if the washer is properly sitting in the spigot, and examine the washer for any damages.
- Replace the washer if needed
Scoop the old washer from the spigot with a flat screwdriver, and insert a new washer into the spigot. Place back the handle and spigot onto the faucet, and turn on the water to test the faucet.
- Replace the faucet valve system washer
If necessary, detach the handle and spigot from the faucet again, loosen and remove the packing nut with a crescent wrench, and remove the faucet valve mechanism. Remove the washer from the valve system, and insert a replacement washer. Check and replace the damaged faucet valve stem as needed.
- Reassemble the faucet
Reattach the valve system to the faucet, replace the packing nut, and lubricate the nut and washer with grease. Reattach the spigot and handle onto the faucet, and turn on the water to test the faucet.
