Goods sold in Los Angeles County carry a minimum sales tax of 9 percent, as of 2015. Some areas of the county have a sales tax as high as 10 percent.
The sales tax in Los Angeles County is higher than any other county in California. The suburbs of La Mirada and Pico Rivera have the highest rate, at 10 percent. Voters approved the higher minimum tax rate of 9 percent in 1980, 1990 and 2008 to help fund the Los Angeles public transportation system. The state-wide minimum sales tax in California is 7.5 percent. In comparison, Ventura County has a minimum sales tax of 7.5 percent, and Orange County has a minimum of 8 percent.
