How do you get rid of a gopher in the yard?

To get rid of a gopher in the yard, spread castor oil granules on the grass and irrigate to transfer the oil to the soil. Reapply granules every two weeks to keep the yard free of gophers and moles. Application time varies depending on yard size.

1. Identify the problem

   Gophers build fan-shaped openings around the entry to their underground tunnels. The tunnels are usually deep enough that only the openings are visible. Moles create underground tunnels closer to the surface, which are visible. Gophers eat plant materials while moles eat grubs. Castor oil granules repel both types of pests.

2. Spread the castor oil granules

   Spread the granules as evenly as possible by hand or using a garden spreader. Even coverage provides the greatest protection. If using a spreader, dial the dispenser mechanism to the lowest possible setting. Application rate is 1 pound per 1000 square feet.

3. Irrigate the treated lawn

   The natural product contains soap, castor oil and corncobs. Water spreads the oil into the soil where the scent repels the pests. Irrigate the lawn after spreading the granules unless rain is expected. Within a few hours of watering-in the product, gophers begin to leave the area.

4. Reapply castor oil to keep the lawn pest free

   The oil dissipates after about two weeks. In order to keep the gophers away, reapply the granules regularly.
