To eliminate mold in your basement, remove moisture from the air with a dehumidifier. Kill mold by mixing a solution of borax and warm water, and wash the entire basement. Treat concentrated areas with a vinegar and water solution. Repeat as needed to prevent future mold growth.
- Remove moisture from the basement
Place a dehumidifier in the basement to remove excess air moisture, which provides a breeding ground for mold spores. Open basement windows and doors, and use floor fans to help circulate dry air.
- Create a cleaning solution
Combine 1 cup of borax per gallon of warm water. Thoroughly mix with a wooden spoon to dissolve the borax. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.
- Prepare for mold removal
To avoid coming in contact mold, which may be harmful to your health, wear an N-05 respirator mask, rubber gloves and non-ventilated goggles.
- Clean the basement
Liberally spray the cleaning solution until the entire basement is saturated. For large basements, forgo the spray, and carefully pour the solution throughout the space.
- Treat concentrated areas
For areas with high mold growth, saturate the mold with undiluted white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to soak into the mold for 30 minutes.
- Rinse away vinegar
After the vinegar has soaked into the mold, rinse the area with the borax and water solution.
- Clean dead mold spores
Once the basement is dry, wipe away mold debris, and immediately discard in a sealed trash bag.
