To get rid of roaches, apply sticky traps, clean the entire house, dry wet areas, and use boric acid to kill the remaining roaches. Roach bait can be used instead of boric acid, if desired.
- Lay down traps
Find out where the roaches are coming from by placing sticky traps around such places as the kitchen. Place the traps near isolated spots, and look for any droppings or eggs in the vicinity. Monitor other areas to see if the roaches moved to another location.
- Clean the area
Get rid of such things as paper bags, cardboard boxes, clutter and newspapers. Remove any paper-based products, since roaches are attracted to them. Place bread, fruits and vegetables in sealed containers. Clean any appliances, and wipe away dirt or grime. Keep dirty dishes out of the sink, and scrub any debris from the dishwasher.
- Keep parts of the house dry
Check around pipes, areas with plants and the refrigerator for excess water or condensation. Make sure there are screens on the water spouts, and plug any drain openings.
- Seal cracks and crevices
Go to the locations of the sticky trips, and seal exposed areas with caulk to prevent more roaches from getting into your home.
- Kill lingering roaches
Purchase boric acid in powder form to apply in areas that cannot be caulked. Place the chemical behind appliances and under sinks. Avoid placing the boric acid near eating areas, and keep it away from pets and children.
