What is the role of perception in learning?

According to Christian Balkenius, perception plays three major roles in learning and behavior in animals. These roles are characterizing the situation, determining whether to move toward or away from a place, situation or object, and telling the motivational system of possible outcomes.
Robert J. Marzano, from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, states that positive attitudes and perceptions in the classroom are key to the ability to learn proficiently. He then says that the student must have a positive attitude and perception of the learning climate and the classroom tasks. Master teachers internalize and use strategies and techniques to foster these perceptions.
