What are rosy red minnows?

Rosy red minnows, which are also known as Pimephales pomelas, are sold in pet stores as a type of feeder fish. This species is actually a fathead minnow, but due to certain genetic mutations, they are a rosy, light color.
When cared for in the appropriate manner, these small fish prosper and provide a non-sickly and clean live food source for carnivorous fish. This species is as hardy as the goldfish, but can survive in both cold and warmer water while producing less waste. Male rosy red minnows are larger and broader with thicker fins, while the females have visible ovipositors.
