Some typical traditional foods that Russians eat for Christmas include kutya, vegetable pies, pagach, kidney beans, potatoes, nuts, dried fruits and wine. In Russia, Christmas dinner tends to be meatless in Russian Orthodox homes. In other homes, baked cod may be eaten as well.
After a fasting period that is observed by some people, a traditional Christmas Eve dinner may start with pagach. The bread is dipped in honey and grated garlic before it is eaten. Kutya, which is porridge made with whole grains, is also served. Pies, which are made with mushrooms, potatoes and cabbage, are also popular dishes. Desserts can include fruit pies, cookies and dried fruits.
