Jim Ryder launched Ryder in 1933, notes the Ryder website. At the time, he made a $35 down payment on a Ford Model A truck and began hauling concrete. Five years later, Ryder leased five trucks to a Miami beverage distributor, which was the beginning of the company’s leasing business.
In his initial years in the business, Ryder wore two wristwatches as a reminder of his commitment to making deliveries on time, according to the company website. By 1937, Ryder had a fleet of 15 trucks, and the fleet grew to nearly 500 trucks by 1949. The company is a Fortune 500 company as of 2015.
