Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota, with a population of 115,863 people as of the 2014 U.S. Census estimate. It accounts for nearly 16 percent of North Dakota's population of 739,482 people and is 48.82 square miles in size.
Fargo was founded in 1871 when settlers claimed homesteads at the place where the Red River crossed the Northern Pacific Railroad. Originally called Centralia, North Dakota, the name was later changed to Fargo after one of the directors of the Northern Pacific Railroad and co-founder of the Wells Fargo Express Company, William G. Fargo. Fargo is a part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area.
