The S&P 500 fund symbol stands for the Standard &Poor's index of 500 publicly traded companieswith thehighest stockvalue and liquid worth in a variety of industries, as stated by Investopedia. The stocks included in the S&P 500 are chosen by the Standard & Poor's Index Committee.

Because of the number and variety of stocks included in the S&P 500, it is the predominant indicator of the health and value of the United States stock market. Companies in the S&P 500 include Amazon (AMZN), Capital One Financial (COF), Whole Foods Market Inc. (WFM) and Marriot (MAR), as reported by CNN Money.

TheStandard &Poor's Corp. was founded in 1941 when two market reporting companies, Standard Statistics and Poor's Publishing, merged. Its stock index was introduced in 1957.
