What is "Where's My Refund"?

"Where's My Refund?" is a method of checking the status of a federal income tax refund, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers access the system online or through the IRS2Go app. Users can check the status of both e-filed returns and paper returns using "Where's My Refund?"

The status of income tax refunds updates only once every 24 hours, notes the IRS. Checking the "Where's My Refund?" system multiple times a day won't produce different results, because of the update schedule. A taxpayer inputs his Social Security Number, filing status and exact amount of the refund to check on the refund status. Users who e-file returns find themselves in the system in about 24 hours, while paper return filers need to wait about 4 weeks to check the status.
