According to Forbes, as of March 3, 2014, the richest man in the world is Bill Gates with a net worth of $76 billion. Bill Gates has held this position for 15 of the previous 20 years; however, for the past four years, Carlos Slim from Mexico held the spot.

Carlos Slim Helu is a telecom mogul from Mexico. The third-richest man is Spanish clothing retailer Amancio Ortega, and the fourth is Warren Buffett. As of 2014, there are 1,645 billionaires globally, with 172 women on the list. Roughly two-thirds of the billionaires made their own fortunes, while just 13 percent inherited them.
