Is it safe for kids to use laughing gas?

Laughing gas is safe for children provided that it is administered by a trained dental professional. Some children refuse the laughing gas out of fear or discomfort from the mask that must be placed over the nose.

Also known as "nitrous oxide," laughing gas is used for pain relief and relaxation during complicated dental procedures. It is a mild sedative that may cause slurred speech. The patient may feel happy or silly. It is administered with a small mask placed over the nose and mouth and takes effect within five minutes. It does not put the patient to sleep but leaves him in a relaxed, cooperative state so dental work can be completed.
