Is it safe to use fabric softener on baby clothes?

Using fabric softener on a baby's clothes is not safe, because it has a negative effect on flame retardant baby pajamas, according to Stacie McClintock from About.com Baby Clothes. Designed to protect children, the material loses some of its flame resistance when washed with fabric softener.
Parents often prefer to wash their baby's clothes with a free-and-clear detergent that uses a hypoallergenic, chemical-free and perfume-free formula that is gentle on sensitive skin. To remove stains from baby clothes, try soaking them in a water with a small amount of the detergent prior to washing. Use the same techniques for baby towels, blankets, sheets and other items.
