Sasebo naval base began operations in 1889, and in June 1946, U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo was formally established and Sasebo became the main launching point for the United Nations and the U.S. Forces during the Korean War. As of 2015, Sasebo supports the U.S. Seventh Fleet.

In 1889, Sasebo became the headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Third Naval District. During the occupation of Japan by the United States, America took control of the base's operation. During the Korean War, Sasebo was a staging point for millions of tons of ammunition, fuel, tanks, trucks and supplies. The base continues to support both American Naval fleets and Japanese domestic defense fleets.
