The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that begins in the lower back and runs through the buttocks and down the leg. Its origin is near the sacral plexus, and its distal end divides into the tibial nerve and the common fibular nerve.
According to WebMD, sciatic nerve pain is commonly experienced by adults ages 30 to 50. Sciatic nerve impingement — commonly called sciatica — can be caused by both muscular and skeletal issues; however, it can often be treated via physical therapy. Symptoms of sciatica include pain and numbness in the lower back, buttocks and leg, which can be accompanied by a tingling sensation and muscular weakness.
