What is a dome volcano?

A dome volcano, or a lava dome, occurs when a dome forms over the vent of a volcano because the eruption is too slow. Once the lava cools down, it forms a dome. The domes are typically fairly steep and filled with silica-rich lava, which is prone to explosions.
A lava dome is typically anywhere between a few meters to a kilometer in height. The shape of the dome varies and may be flat topped, piston shaped or circular. Dome volcanoes often occur in larger volcanoes and are found in the crater; however, domes can also be found away from the crater.
