According to Dr. Yuranga Weerakkody at Radiopaedia.org, the normal fetal heart rate ranges between 120 to 160 beats per minute. It starts at around three weeks, increases to the maximum of up to 170 at around nine to 10 weeks, then decreases.
According to a study conducted by the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Wright State University, contrary to common belief, there is no difference in the heart rate between male and female fetuses. Its study of 233 male fetuses and 244 female fetuses showed that the average heart rate was 154.9 beats per minute for males and 151.7 beats per minute for females.
