Are turkeys male or female?

Male turkeys are called gobblers or toms, and female turkeys are called hens. The males are larger than the females, weighing between 16 and 24 pounds, while a female may only weigh up to 10 pounds.

There are distinctive features that set apart male and female turkeys. Male turkeys have bright, shiny feathers. The hens have drab looking feathers that help them blend into their natural habitat when nesting. A male turkey's head can change color from red to white to blue in a matter of minutes, while a female's head remains a blue-gray color. Adult male turkeys have spurs on their legs, and females do not.
