What is a pedal pulse?

The pedal pulse is the pulse taken on the top and inner side of the foot. It is found by placing the fingers lateral to the extensor tendon of the big toe or behind and below the medial malleolus of the ankle.
The pedal pulse is often taken in patients who have foot or leg conditions to monitor adequate blood flow in the extremities. In addition to the foot and ankle area, the human body has several pulse regions. They are found in areas where an artery is close to the skin. Pulse rates vary according to age and fitness level.
