What is static stretching?

Static stretching is the act of using prolonged holds to increase the flexibility of muscles and to lengthen soft tissue, according to Therapeutic Associates. Static stretches are performed while standing still.
According to Therapeutic Associates, static stretches were once the preferred method of pre-activity warm-up for athletes, and they are still used to some extent. Research has found that the effects of static stretches may decrease strength in the targeted muscles for up to one hour, which could contribute to an increased risk of injury. Because of this, many people use dynamic stretching instead, which involves more body movement and helps short-term flexibility.
