Seborrheic dermatitis causes hair loss if the scalp is one of the affected areas, according to the American Hair Loss Association. The inflammation caused by seborrheic dermatitis slows or completely stops hair growth.
The causes of seborrheic dermatitis still remain unclear, according to Mayo Clinic. The symptoms of the condition include flaky skin, red patches and dandruff. Mayo Clinic experts explain that the malassezia fungus is believed to be partially responsible for the condition. Malassezia feeds on the oil that is secreted from hair follicles and creates excess dead skin cells. These cells create an unhealthy environment for hair growth, which can lead to hair loss.
