How do you know when to seek medical attention for constant heartburn?

A physician should examine individuals who have persistent heartburn or take medication to treat heartburn symptoms daily, notes Mayo Clinic. These may be symptoms of gastroesphageal reflux disease, or GERD, which is chronic condition that causes acid to regurgitate from the stomach to the esophagus.
People who have chronic heartburn or GERD may also develop a sore throat, cough or laryngitis, according to WebMD. If left untreated, both conditions may damage the esophagus and sometimes lead to cancer. If heartburn worsens or is accompanied with unusual symptoms, such as sweating, dizziness and arm pain, Mayo Clinic recommends immediate medical help. These are signs and symptoms of a heart attack.
