What is a self-cleaning car air filter?

Self-cleaning air filters for cars would not require the air filter to be removed from under the hood of the car, but there are no self-cleaning car air filters for most family-sized vehicles as of 2015. Self-cleaning air filters are used for industrial applications and large automobiles with diesel engines.

Since a dusty air filter can restrict performance and cut gas mileage by 10 percent, it has to be removed in its plastic casing from under the car hood and rinsed once a year. Self-cleaning air filters are only available and common for steel, chemical, and cement plants, as well as gas turbines, compressors and diesel engines.
