The men's false shirt turtleneck, or dickey, can still be purchased today from any department store selling major designers' apparel. They can also be purchased from online retailers, including individuals who make and sell their own. They were seen on 2012 fall fashion runways, and have made a comeback along with regular turtlenecks and other layering pieces.
Dickies were popularized in the 1970s, and were commonly seen on actor Steve McQueen. They were popular because they enabled men to achieve a layered look, without having lots of added bulk. Today, they can be purchased as a tube of fabric that sits around the neck.
