Sequential compression devices are used after joint replacement in order to reduce venous stasis and/or deep venous thrombosis, according to Medscape. Deep venous thrombosis is a common downside of knee replacement surgery.
Sequential compression devices are also used for patients who are immobile for long periods of time to prevent blood from pooling in the lower leg area, states Medical Specialties Distributors, LLC. The sequential compression device consists of an air pump that is connected to a sleeve using several air tubes. When engaged, air is pumped into the sleeve, which creates pressure around the calves to improve vein function.
