The setting for "A Child Called It" is California. Most of the book takes place in the author's childhood home and at his school, but there are also scenes by the Russian river and in a grocery store.
Published in 1995, "A Child Called It" is about the abusive childhood of author David Pelzer. The book was so named because the author did not have a real name until he choose one for himself. To his abusive mother, he was simply an "It."
Most of his time was spent in the garage or basement of his house where he was neglected, starved and beaten. However, many scenes take place at school, a refuge from the abuse.
