Three women from Nevada who experienced complications related to DePuy ASR hip replacements received settlements of $200,000 each in August 2013, according to DrugWatch. A California jury awarded a plaintiff $8.3 million the same year, the majority of which was for pain and suffering.

Johnson & Johnson, the parent company of DePuy, agreed in November 2013 to settle an additional 7,000 cases for $250,000 each, states DrugWatch. Johnson & Johnson allocated more than $4 billion to settle DePuy ASR or Pinnacle hip replacement claims. More than 12,000 individuals filed claims, as of 2015. DePuy publicly claimed that the metal-on-metal hip replacement systems were safe and effective, while internal projections estimated a 40 percent failure rate within five years.
