How do you sew a bow tie?

To sew a bow-tie, use a template to cut fabric and interfacing, and sew the pieces together with a narrow seam. Cotton fabric is recommended.
- Cut the fabric and interfacing
Trace bow-tie templates onto fabric, and cut out two pieces each for the short and long portions of the tie. Trace the templates onto a piece of lightweight fusible interfacing, and cut out two pieces each for the small and large sections.
- Iron the interfacing
Place the interfacing onto the fabric with the dots of the interfacing lying on the wrong side of the fabric. Fuse the interfacing with an iron. Trim any excess from around the fabric edges. This step provides structure to the tie.
- Join the pieces into sets
With right sides facing, pin a short and long piece together at the angled end, and sew across the angle with a 1/4-inch seam. Repeat this process for the second set of pieces.
- Sew the sets together
With right sides facing, pin the two sets together. Sew a 1/4-inch seam all around, leaving a small opening to turn the piece.
- Finish the tie
Clip into the seam allowance around the curves, but do not slice the seam. Trim the corners close to the stitching. Turn the tie right-side out, and smooth out the curves and points. Iron the tie, and close the opening with hand-stitching. Fold into a bow tie.
