What Shakespearean work was The Lion King based on?

Disney's "The Lion King" offers a few high-level parallels to the Shakespearean drama "Hamlet." For example, both stories focus on a young protagonist whose father, a king, has died at the hands of the young hero's uncle, the king's scheming brother. The antagonistic characters are represented by Claudius in "Hamlet" and Scar in "The Lion King."

Overall, though, "The Lion King" is a much more uplifting and family-friendly story than "Hamlet," which is a dark and tragic tale that ends up having a rather high body count in the end. This body count includes the young protagonist, Hamlet, whereas in "The Lion King," the young protagonist, Simba, ends up triumphing in the end.
